I was honoured almost 20 years ago when colleagues and business friends started asking me how I did what I did. How did I earn a nice 6 figure income, take 10 to 12 weeks of holidays per year, work less than 30 hours a week and have so damn much fun doing it? I was happy to give them feedback and thoughts on how I did it, but it started taking up so much of my time I decided to start honouring myself and charging for my time. That was the birth of my coach/consulting business.
Now almost 20 years later I wanted to share the top 4 things I have observed/learned from the thousands of peak performers I have had the privilege of being in service to.
1/ PURPOSE – My most successful clients have all been driven by a sense of purpose and they are clear about their “why”. As a result the “hows” of their life and business are more apt to look after themselves. If they do not, they focus tirelessly on the next step to move them forward. That is the power of a purpose driven life that I aspire everyone to create.
2/ THE POWER OF AUTHENTICITY – The most powerful, successful and fulfilled clients I have ever worked with are the ones who completely owned the power of authentic expression. They consistently and tirelessly worked at releasing everything that was not authentic in their expression, both personally and professionally. The power, creativity and wisdom that was available to them as a result catapulted them forward in both their personal and professional lives.
My experience tells me that most people have a patchwork quilt of different ideas and beliefs in their mind about who they are and what they want out of their life. This forms their belief systems which impacts everything they think, say and do and the majority of this is not truly authentic to who they really are. As a result they are not as fulfilled, powerful or successful as they could be. Taking the time to do the inner work to get in touch with your most authentic self and spending the rest of your life working at expressing yourself only from that place is one of the keys to living a fulfilling and outrageously successful life.
3/ THE POWER OF TEAM – The bigger the vision, the bigger the team needed to fulfill that vision. Every successful person I have ever coached saw the benefit and the power of having a team to support them in their personal and professional lives and worked hard at being a great leader. The size of the team is always directly proportional to the size of the vision and there is no right or wrong size or composition to a team. That is dependent on the magnitude of the vision, but every successful person sees the value of a team and allows themselves to be supported. This includes the support of those around you the minute you leave the office each day. My clients who’ve seen the most success in practice have created a loving environment to come home to.
4/ ADAPTABILITY – Another key character trait of peak performers is the ability to adapt. On a day to day basis it is asking themselves “what is the highest and best use of my time” and changing course if what they are working on is not the best use of their time. On a broader scale it might be dropping projects and/or changing course on goals to maximize their efficiency and productivity. They are masters of adaptation and are willing to make decisions quickly and then stick to them.
5/ DYNAMIC BALANCE – These people are grounded in their personal lives outside of their businesses and make their families, sports and hobbies a priority. The reason I refer to this as dynamic balance is because it is constantly flowing and shifting. They might put in a week of long days and nights and then take a week off. It is not about rigid balance, it is about dynamic balance and fulfilling their purpose in business while honouring their amazing personal lives.
